What does the Plate Calculator do?
Unlike estimators, plate loading is discrete arithmetic. A target may be impossible when the required plate combination is not available.

A bounded subset search considers each entered physical plate once per side, checks symmetric totals, then selects exact, nearest-below or nearest-above according to preference.
Worked calculation example
For 100 kg total with a 20 kg bar and no collars, 80 kg remains for plates, so each side requires 40 kg.
The live calculator retains greater internal precision and rounds only when presenting the result.
