How it works

Method

A word is a run of letters or digits; apostrophes and hyphens inside a word do not split it. Characters are Unicode characters, counted with and without whitespace. A sentence ends at ".", "!", "?" or "…", or at the end of the text. Paragraphs are blocks separated by a blank line. Reading time = words ÷ reading speed.

Units

Counts are whole numbers. Reading time uses the configured words-per-minute speed.

Examples

  • "Hello world. This is a test!" has 6 words, 2 sentences and 28 characters.
  • "Don't stop" has 2 words.

Limitations

Sentence counting is approximate: abbreviations such as "e.g." count as sentence endings. Languages written without spaces between words (for example Chinese or Japanese) are counted per run of characters, not per word.
